Next Generation Adaptive Optics

چکیده
INTRODUCTION 3 This document discusses considerations for the DAVINCI instrument’s pupil image quality and pupil mask selections. The DAVINCI instrument (Adkins et al., 2010) requires a cold pupil mask to control background, especially in the near-IR wavelengths. Different size masks may be required to balance throughput loss and background suppression, with additional masks required for the DAVINCI imager’s coronagraphic mode. The intent of the DAVINCI instrument design is to limit the background sources seen by the imager and IFS detectors in DAVINCI to the telescope, AO system, and the entrance window of the DAVINCI dewar. This will be accomplished by cooling the interior of the instrument to 120 K and providing a high efficiency cold stop and stray light suppression baffles to control the background seen by the detectors.

Adaptive Optics for Astronomy
Adaptive Optics is a prime example of how progress in observational astronomy can be driven by technological developments. At many observatories it is now considered to be part of a standard instrumentation suite, enabling ground-based telescopes to reach the diffraction limit and thus providing spatial resolution superior to that achievable from space with current or planned satellites. In thi...
متن کاملReal-time control for Keck Observatory next-generation adaptive optics
The next generation adaptive optics systems for large telescopes will be complex systems far larger, more complex, and with higher performance than any currently installed. This requires adopting new algorithms, technologies, and architectures. The Keck next generation adaptive optics (NGAO) system requires real-time wavefront reconstruction and tomography given input from 7 laser and 3 natural...
متن کاملComparative Study of Neural Network Frameworks for the Next Generation of Adaptive Optics Systems
Many of the next generation of adaptive optics systems on large and extremely large telescopes require tomographic techniques in order to correct for atmospheric turbulence over a large field of view. Multi-object adaptive optics is one such technique. In this paper, different implementations of a tomographic reconstructor based on a machine learning architecture named "CARMEN" are presented. B...
متن کاملW. M. Keck Observatory Next-Generation Adaptive Optics Facility: Science Operations
The W. M. Keck Observatory is currently engaged in the conceptual design of a powerful new adaptive optics (AO) science capability providing precision AO correction in the near infrared (NIR) and visible and faint object multiplexed integral field spectroscopy. In this poster, we present the conceptual design of the Science Operations for this Next Generation Adaptive Optics (NGAO) facility. We...
متن کاملProgress with Adaptive Optics Testbeds at the UCO/Lick Observatory Laboratory for Adaptive Optics
We report on experimental results with adaptive optics testbeds at the UCO/Lick Observatory. One testbed is dedicated to high contrast AO imaging and is a prototype for a ground-based extrasolar planet imager for the Gemini telescope. The second testbed is dedicated to developing concepts and architectures for multilaser guidestar tomography in wide-field AO applications. Such systems are now u...
